Tucked between pastoral mountains that serve as a
picturesque backdrop for stunning pink sunsets, this
California Mission-style town is world-famous for
physical, mental and spiritual rejuvenation. It earned its nickname,
“Shangri La,” after serving as the location for the 1937
film, “Lost Horizon,” based on the novel by James Hilton that
describes a fictional, mystical and harmonious valley.
The natural landscape creates limited accessibility, which
has helped to preserve this sleepy town’s desired reprieve
from city life, despite its close proximity to Los Angeles. But
it hasn’t stopped many celebrities from selecting Ojai as
their retreat or residence, and property values have soared
as a result. Many working artists also call Ojai their home,
and they have fostered a community thriving with restaurants
and galleries. Many are located in “The Arcade,” Ojai’s
historic downtown area, which is also where the city gathers
for annual celebrations and festivals.
