Oxnard boasts the largest population in Ventura County: more than 180,000 people call this city their home. Residents are drawn to the climate, prospering economy, and an easy commute to Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Developers have responded to this recent surge by building scores of new housing developments throughout the city. Yet, the city has maintained a small town atmosphere, in part by focusing on its heritage. It’s named for Henry T. Oxnard, who along with his family, prospered in the region as a sugar beet farmer during the early 20th century. Agriculture remains a significant part of Oxnard’s landscape, economy and culture. For a taste of the many crops, farm stands offering a bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables gives travelers ample opportunity for rest stops.

The city has also preserved much of its historic architecture. Following the lead of other county redevelopment projects, Oxnard’s charming downtown district includes a multiplex cinema, several trendy shops and a great selection of restaurants and cafes. Oxnard is equally proud of its unique cultural diversity. “We like to make the analogy that all of the ingredients that go into salsa represents a blending of our diversity,” says Oxnard Chamber of Commerce President Nancy Lindholm. Each October, the city hosts the “Salsa Festival,” a two-day multicultural celebration of food, music and dance held in the downtown Park Plaza. The festival draws crowds with main stage entertainment, salsa dancing, salsa tasting, a “kids korner,” and a marketplace. Festival admission and parking are free. Throughout the year, Oxnard’s businesses and arts communities are equally welcoming to visitors, inviting them to explore this diverse city.
